MARKETPLACE FOR EAST COAST STAPLES

VISITING markets is an excellent way to interact with locals and gain insight into their culture and tradition.

This is why visits to Pasar Payang in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, and Pasar Siti Khadijah in Kota Baru, Kelantan, are not to be missed.

An array of handicrafts, local treats and traditional wear can be found in both places.

On Friday and Saturday, which is the weekend in the East Coast, these marketplaces will be bustling with shoppers from all over Malaysia.

At Pasar Payang, it is common to see traders standing among stacks of packed foods like keropok, salted fish and other tidbits.

Many clothing stalls, located in another section, also sell batik, which is a popular product in Terengganu.

Those looking to savour local cuisine should head to the food court.

The market operates daily from 7am to 6pm.

Pasar Siti Khadijah is a three-storey complex where women make up the majority of traders.

The ground floor houses stalls selling fresh produce while the first floor hosts those selling dry food and a food court.

Nasi kerabu and nasi padang are popular offerings, apart from kuih akok (a sweet pastry made with flour and sugar).

Stalls selling clothes, prayer garments and cookware are located on the top floor.

The market opens daily from 7.30am to 5.30pm.
